Sands China Launches Latest Horizontal Development Programme

(Macao, May 10, 2018)Sands China Ltd. held a sharing session Thursday at The Venetian® Macao to review the achievements of its collaboration with local education institutions in developing professional talent. The company also used the opportunity to hold a kick-off ceremony for its newest horizontal development initiative, the Sands China Manager Development Programme for Integrated Resorts

With the support and direction set by the Macao SAR government, Sands China has been working to develop Macao’s local talent, through initiatives such as proactively collaborating with education institutions in Macao on a wide diversity of professional development programmes.

Thursday’s sharing session showcased examples of Sands China’s collaboration with various education institutions, with programme types comprising continuing education, professional certification, vocational training, horizontal talent development, elite talent development, responsible gaming, and the professional development of Macao locals, including those not employed by Sands China.

A few programme highlights include:
•    One-year Diploma Programme in Business Management with the University of Macau – more than 140 team members have earned diplomas to date.
•    Sands China International Strategic Leadership Programme for Integrated Resorts – with the University of Saint Joseph in Macao; the Católica Lisbon School of Business &
Economics in Lisbon, Portugal; and Cornell School of Hotel Administration in Ithaca, New York, USA. Now 25 local management team members have completed the programme.
•    Fast Track Supervisor Programme – a total of 21 exceptional local university graduates have become supervisors working in various departments.
•    Sands Retail Academy – has offered complimentary training to retail professionals at Sands Shoppes, with over 26,000 training hours delivered to more than 6,200 employees of
     Sands Shoppes retailers to date.

Thursday’s sharing session included the signing of a ceremonial certificate by Sands China Ltd. President Dr. Wilfred Wong and representatives from several Macao education institutions, symbolising Sands China’s commitment to their continued educational collaboration, and in gratitude for their partnership and cooperation.

“Sands China considers talent development as crucial to the company’s success and for the continued development of Macao as a world centre of tourism and leisure,” Dr. Wong said. “We consider our team members as our most valuable asset, and we will continue to invest resources into offering them a diverse range of career development programmes. We are very thankful for the education institutions we work with for helping us provide a platform for the professional development of Macao locals.”

Thursday’s event also included a kick-off ceremony for the Sands China Manager Development Programme for Integrated Resorts, officiated by Dr. Wong and Dr. Fanny Vong, president of the Institute for Tourism Studies (IFT).

The recently launched initiative is the company’s latest horizontal development programme for team members. A 24-month career development opportunity jointly developed by Sands China and IFT, it offers professional training courses and horizontal work experience to nurture local leaders in hospitality management for integrated resorts.

It is the first-of-its-kind horizontal development programme for pit supervisors and pit managers, offering them two years of academic coursework at IFT and on-the-job training with three Sands China departments: food and beverage, front office and housekeeping. During the first 12 months, participants receive one day of paid training at IFT and four days of training at Sands China departments. For the next 12 months, they receive full-time training at one of the departments in order to develop skills to overcome challenges and gain management experience.

The programme has attracted applications from over 250 team members, with 48 chosen to join the programme this year. Participants were carefully selected based on their educational background, current position, and passion for continuous learning – as the programme is very intensive; qualified participants will be able to obtain international certification from IFT at its conclusion.

The first batch of 23 team members have already started their coursework; upon completion, qualified participants can move to middle management in integrated resort operations, in positions such as assistant manager or manager. Among the participants, 12 are graduates of the one-year Diploma Programme in Business Management – exclusively offered by Sands China and the University of Macau to encourage team members to continue their educations.

Comprising over 1,400 paid hours of professional training, the Sands China Manager Development Programme for Integrated Resorts allows participants to learn and apply theories to real-world integrated resort operations and to receive comprehensive on-the-job training from experienced and professional trainers. Each participant receives a subsidy of over MOP 16,000 from Sands China for the coursework.

Committed to developing a well-trained workforce, Sands China offers a variety of horizontal and vertical mobility opportunities to its team members through internal promotions and integrated resort career development programmes. The company is also dedicated to the training and professional development of Macao locals, including those not employed by Sands China – such as the staff of partner retailers – with the aim of contributing to Macao’s growth as a world centre of tourism and leisure.
